For Users: Want to access rich on-demand health insight?
Apervita is a secure platform and marketplace for health analytics & data. Health enterprises use the Apervita platform to either rapidly create, publish and distribute analytics and data to their own organization or to buy and deploy analytics & data from the Apervita Marketplace. Apervita acts as an independent insight execution layer, complementing existing systems such as EMRs, software applications, business intelligence tools, and data repositories.
The Apervita platform provides self-service tools to make it easy to share analytics and data with users, allowing results to be delivered to any system of choice. Apervita throws out the traditional data model, allowing data to be easily connected to the platform, with no prior knowledge of the analytics that are going to be used. Uniquely, Apervita makes analytics portable by separating analytics from the data and user interface.
Analytics can cover a broad spectrum of possibilities, such as rules, algorithms, pathways, protocols, predictive scores, equations, and measures. Data can include structured, unstructured, periodically updated or real time streams across clinical, financial, operational and strategic data types.
As well as being a platform, Apervita is also a two-sided marketplace. It allows health enterprises to securely publish and monetize health intellectual property so that other health enterprises and professionals can subscribe to it. The Marketplace allows users to subscribe to hundreds of off-the-shelf analytics and data sets from leading providers.
Apervita empowers health enterprises of all types, such as providers, payers and pharmaceutical businesses to create, share and distribute knowledge in the form of analytics & data sets.
There are three primary types of roles that use Apervita:
- Users - people working within a health enterprise that consume health insight.
- Authors - individuals and organizations that wish to publish their health knowledge in the form of computable and executable analytics & data on the Apervita platform.
- Partners - organizations that can help users and authors to more effectively realize the value of the analytics and data made available through Apervita.
Apervita is an open platform that allows anyone to create analytics and use the resulting insight. The range of use cases is broad and includes from provider, payer, pharma. retail, device and health IT vendors that service health care enterprise needs. All platform users must accept Apervita’s standard Terms of Service (ToS) agreement. The ToS include three parts: Part 1 of the ToS includes general usage provisions. Part 2 includes all financial services. Part 3 covers the publication of insights to the Market. In addition, all Users must agree to the platform Business Associate Agreement (BAA), which applies to the Subscriber and Apervita (Business Associate). All applicable health related regulations and laws apply to the use of the Apervita Platform.
No. Apervita, Inc. does not have access to any of your data or any of your intellectual property deployed on the platform. Apervita employees do not have any access to your data either. Your data and your intellectual property are private and only managed by you on Apervita.
No. Another important aspect to consider is that Apervita does not request data secondary use rights, other than usage statistics for platform monitoring. Providers often lose rights to their data to unscrupulous vendors. With Apervita, your data rights remain under your control.
Creating analytics on the Apervita platform only requires thought, planning and modest IT assistance. For Informatics & IT: Want to know more about the technical side?
Apervita complements existing IT architectures, acting as the insight execution layer between a data layer (e.g. EMR, data warehouse, repositories and data lakes) and a presentation layer (e.g. EMR, business intelligence tools, reporting systems and apps). Apervita leverages existing data sources, enabling the rapid creation of 100s of analytics independently from the data, and allows them to be easily executed and distributed on-demand to any user, system or app.
Apervita does away with the data model. The platform uses modern technology and techniques so that any data can be easily connected to the platform through web service APIs. Apervita requires no knowledge of SQL programming, no prior knowledge of data models, tables and mappings, and largely does away with the need for data transformation. Apervita partners can help integrate source system data into Apervita APIs.
Apervita provides web service APIs so that results from analytics and data can be delivered to any app or system where insights are required to be accessed. APIs can be easily activated and managed by enterprise administrators using the Apervita platform. Apervita partners can help integrate data into the user workflow.
Yes, Apervita integrates with many EMR products. The platform can ingest data from real time or batch data EMR data sources or staging repositories through Apervita web service APIs. The results of insights executed on the Apervita platform can be returned to the EMR system for presentation in a variety of ways including as an alert, score, text, chart or dashboard within a browser window, iFrame, alerting framework, or any other capability supported by the EMR.
There are several options from the visualization library where you can package your analytics or data as a simple score, table bar chart, line chart, and measure fraction or pie chart.
Yes. Data can be streamed to the platform through the platform web service APIs or batch appended on a periodic based, such as hourly. Real time data can be sourced from a HL7 or Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) or extracted directly from sources data bases. Where required, Apervita Partners provide professional services to assist in the extraction of data from source systems.
Apervita unambiguously secures protected health information (PHI) for health enterprises, providing peace of mind that data is deeply protected meeting enterprise-class standards, and achieving and exceeding the requirements of the most demanding data privacy and security officers. Apervita is hosted in a secure, state-of-the-art facility at AWS. Apervita uses cloud computing principles to manage scale and redundancy, however our infrastructure is hosted in a private cloud-based infrastructure. Apervita is hosted in a private, secure, HIPAA-compliant infrastructure behind private firewalls in our own network within a AWS data center. Apervita data servers are hosted on dedicated servers with dedicated disks with full encryption at rest and in flight. Apervita stateless web servers and compute servers use cloud resources behind a private network, which provides secure scalability and redundancy. Apervita infrastructure is monitored by intrusion detection software (IDS) provided by AlertLogic and AWS. We have a BAA with AWS and all physical access to Apervita infrastructure is monitored by AWS policies. AWS has several certifications including IGSOC, Safe Harbor, and ISO27001.
A health analytic is any knowledge that can be represented as a formula (algorithm), performance measure (numerator/denominator/exclusions), medical pathway (standardized care process) and/or a protocol (clinical practice guideline). Health analytics can incorporate a series of steps that compute complex patient, population and performance data to produce useful indicators or recommendations. These indicators may include, but are not limited to: lists, scores, rules, mortality, severity, morbidity, deterioration, rankings and patient cohorts. On Apervita, analytics are authored using our own Python scripting environment which is integrated within our platform user experience. Python is a popular, flexible and simple scripting language that is used by leading companies around the world such as YouTube and Google.
A Population is one or more data sets made up of individual subjects (e.g. patients, inventory, claims or drugs). Data sets can be uploaded manually (e.g., .xls files, .csv files, etc…) or through automated processes (e.g. exports from “systems of record” like electronic health records, laboratory systems, order management systems, etc…). Once a data set has been uploaded to the Apervita platform, it is appended to a Population. This Population may then be used with any analytic, provided that it is placed in the same Workspace where the target analytic is available. A Population can include one or more data sets. Derived Populations allow users to define sub-populations by creating a filter on a population. This approach allows a user to create population definitions that are relevant to their analytics.
A Workspace is a closed user group which can be set up by an Apervita administrator to allow users to privately access populations, insights and dashboards. Users can only access those items that have been shared in that Workspace. Workspaces allow administrators of an organization to give specific user groups certain privileges to view and use only those insights and populations that are relevant to them.
Permissions are assigned by workspace and role. In each workspace you can give each individual end user, author, informatics, publish, subscribe and admin permissions which determine the items they can view and edit.
With Apervita it is possible to pull the results from one analytic and use those results in another. In this way, there is no need to re-write algorithms over and over again, but instead you can use building blocks that are already available. It is possible to link together analytics in a variety of ways. For example, a readmission prevention algorithm may need to use a co-morbidity score provided by a second algorithm. It can simply call that separate algorithm and use its results. A master algorithm could pull results from several algorithms and process the results into one result. In another example, analytics can be daisy chained together so each analytic is dependent on the result of a prior analytic.
For Authors: Interested in distributing your analytics and/or data?
An Author is anyone who brings or creates analytics and data on the Apervita platform, including: algorithms, measures, pathways, protocols, connectors, or data sets. Apervita enables anyone with basic programming knowledge to create, test, and publish an analytic to the Apervita Marketplace. Authoring analytics or uploading data on the Apervita platform is a self-service process. Once authored they can be shared with other users at the Author’s discretion. A step-by-step User Guide is available upon request.
Many owners of heath intellectual property (IP) have tried to sell their IP on their own, but have struggled due to the major upfront investments. To get to market, it requires money and time, while at the same time CIOs want to consolidate their fragmented applications into a single more manageable platform. Apervita has taken away most of the hard work and risk, and significantly reduced the cost barriers by providing a purpose-built platform, self-service tools, a marketplace, and support to make it easy to get to market fast. Apervita provides authors a one-stop-shop to publish and commercialize their analytics and data.
The Apervita platform is designed to protect health IP published by authors. It does this by allowing authors to limit access to the source script or make it accessible only to authorized users. The authoring process allows for fine-grained control of what is exposed to an end-user. The original script source is never accessible to another user; it is only subscribed to in the Marketplace where the source script is never visible. Only the inputs, outputs and selected parameters are accessible.
A subscriber is the organization that uses analytics and data on the Apervita platform. These analytics and data may be sourced from their own organization or from the Apervita Marketplace. The subscriber can be any type of health professional such as an executive, a clinician, a nurse, a procurement manager, an administrator, or a category manager.
The authors and/or publishers control the pricing of their analytics and data. Apervita can provide guidance. Typically authors price on a per-use or per-month basis. For example, an author may charge a transaction fee of $0.10/use for their analytic, while another author may charge a flat fee of $20.00/month/user. Apervita works closely with authors to determine the right choice of pricing model, but ultimately the decision is left to the author.
Apervita handles all revenue transactions and passes on income to authors or publishers on a monthly basis for all receipts received in the previous month. Apervita retains 30% of the revenue as a fee for the platform services.
No. There are no support obligations required of authors to support their analytics or data sets. However, it should be noted that support options could affect the “marketability” of the analytic (i.e. end-users might expect a minimum level of support). Apervita is available to help authors decide on the right support model that meets their user needs.
The Apervita team will hold a kick-off training session to teach the authors how to use and develop on the platform. Shortly after authors will have had the opportunity to explore the platform and schedule a question and answer session with the informatics support engineers. The authors will develop their analytics and data accordingly and alert the Apervita team when programming has been completed. Once programming and testing has been done, the Authoring & Content team assists the Author with developing content descriptions for the Marketplace and provides guidance on pricing. After all parties have approved the content descriptions, we will then release the insights, populations, measures or ontologies for publication to the Marketplace.
The End User License Agreement (EULA) governs the relationship between the Publisher and Subscriber. Publishers license their Insights to a Subscriber through the platform, with all indemnifications, warranties, representations, liabilities and other general terms that a Publisher would expect to be applicable.
